Learning Objectives

- The student should be able to describe the basic principles of capitalist, socialist, and mixed economies.
- The student should be able to assess the extent of economic concentration in the United States in the realms of the corporations, unions, and government.
- The student should be able to describe the insights of the functionalist and conflict perspectives regarding the concentration of political and economic power, assess the validity of the power elite and pluralist models of power distribution, describe the concentration of power in the world economic system, and describe such concentration in the mass media.
- The student should be able to explain the problems created by the concentration of power, both in the United States and the world.
- The student should be able to describe what actions are being taken to alleviate the problems created by the concentration of power, what role the government should play in implementing these solutions, and describe the laissez faire and interventionist approaches to this.
