Learning Objectives

- The student should be able to define minority group and racism and identify what constitutes a racial and an ethnic group.
- The student should be able to explain the social and social psychological sources of prejudice and discrimination and describe the consequences that discrimination has for individuals and society.
- The student should be able to describe the major racial and ethnic minorities in the United States, discuss their current circumstances and opportunities, and show how the mass media portray and influence the position of minorities in society.
- The student should be able to describe various possibilities for race and ethnic relations in the United States in the future, including the emphasis on assimilation or pluralism, whether race or class is more important today, and the status of affirmative action.
