• The student should be able to define what drugs and drug abuse are, explain what drug addiction and drug tolerance and drug dependence are, and summarize the cost to society of drug abuse.

• The student should be able to describe the various categories of psychoactive drugs that are of concern and, for each category, discuss the major drugs in that category and their effects, extent, and consequences.

• The student should be able to describe the biological, psychological, and sociological explanations for drug abuse and assess the evidence for each.

• The student should be able to summarize the various programs and policies that have been implemented to reduce drug abuse and assess the evidence for how well each works.
