Learning Objectives

  • The student should be able to define the different kinds of collective violence that are the focus of the chapter and describe the extent of each type of violence.

  • The student should be able to describe and assess the various explanations advanced regarding why collective violence and war occur, including the biological approaches, the social sources, and the three sociological perspectives, and discuss the role of the mass media in the social construction of collective violence and war.

  • The student should be able to describe the various consequences of war and terrorism.

  • The student should be able to describe the various policies and programs that have been or might be implemented in order to reduce collective violence, war, and terrorism and to evaluate the likely contribution of each.
