Applying the Ideas
This activity contains 3 questions.
Making decisions is one of the more difficult thinking skills teachers can help elementary students construct. List six problems appropriate for fourth grade students to decide upon.

Set a familiar object in front of you, such as a watch or a pencil, and list all the observations you are able to make about the object in one minute. Have a peer time you. Then, switch with you partner, have him or her make observations of another object and keep time for the observation period. Compare your observations. How many did you make? Which senses did you use? Try making more observations of the same object for another minute. Were you able to make more new observations? This is one way to help students extend their observation period and the number and kind of observations they make.
