image dissector – Farnsworth’s television vacuum tube

iconoscope – Zworykin’s television vacuum tube

persistence of vision – retina’s capacity to retain an image briefly, allowing the brain to fill in the gaps between successive images.

streaming – downloading video and audio from the web in advance of playing

radio with pictures – simplistic definition of TV

coaxial cable – heavy-duty landline for video signals

optical fiber cable – high-capacity glass filament for video signals

DBS – direct-broadcast satellite with transmission from orbit to receiver

Digital Satellite Service – pioneer DBS company

Northpoint – company that uses DBS frequencies to broadcast television signals from terrestrial transmitters

interactive television – a television-web hybrid that allows viewers to send and receive web messages on television sets

ABC television – American Broadcasting Company, built from ABC radio network

CBS television – Columbia Broadcasting System, built from CBS radio network under William Paley

NBC television – National Broadcast Company, built from NBC radio network under David Sarnoff

Big Three – ABC, CBS, and NBC

microwave relays – towers re-angle over-air signals to match earth’s curvature

General Electric – current NBC owner

United Paramount Theatres – strengthened ABC after 1953 merger

CapCities Communications – owner of ABC before purchase by Disney

Dumont network – 1950-1958

Fox – launched in 1986

WB Television Network – new network launched by Warner Brothers in for over-air affiliates

UPN – new network Paramount launched in 1995 for over-air affiliates

CATV – short for Community Antenna Television, an early name for cable systems

HBO – short for Home Box Office, first cable programming via satellite

pay-per-view – cable companies charge subscribers for each program they watch

superstation – over-air station available by satellite to local cable systems

CNN – short for Cable News Network, first 24-hour TV news network

pilot – prototype show for a series

syndicators – independent program producers and distributors

standards and practices – network offices to review programs for suitability

magazine – usually investigative news program with three or four unrelated segments

Carnegie Commission – recommended upgrading noncommercial broadcast system

public TV – post-Carnegie term for noncommercial TV

ETV – educational TV, early term for noncommercial TV

CPB – Corporation for Public Broadcasting, funnels federal money to public broadcast system

PBS – Public Broadcasting System, national TV network for noncommercial television stations

NPR – National Public Radio, a national network for noncommercial radio stations

Children’s Television Workshop – created Sesame Street

Nielson overnights – quick television ratings on network programs the night before

People’s Awards – based on viewer balloting

Emmy Awards – selected by members of the Academy of Television Arts and Sciences to recognize excellence
