social Darwinism – application of Darwin’s survival-of-fittest theory

Ludlow Massacre – Colorado tragedy that Ivy Lee converted into public relations victory

puffery – inflated claims

external public relations – gearing messages to outside organization, constituencies, individuals

internal public relations – gearing messages to inside groups, constituencies, individuals

media relations – using mass media to convey messages

public relations agencies – companies that provide public relations services

publicity – brings public attention to something

promotion – promoting a cause, idea

lobbying – influencing a public policy, usually legislation regulations

political communication – advising candidates, groups on public policy issues, usually in elections

image consulting – coaching individuals for media contacts

contingency planning – developing programs in advance of an unscheduled but anticipated event

crisis management – helping a client through an emergency

advertising – unlike public relations, advertising seeks to sell product, service

integrated marketing communication – comprehensive program that links public relations, advertising

institutional advertising – paid space and time to promote institution’s image, position

media kit – a packet provided news reporters to tell the story in an advantageous way

proactive media relations – taking initiative to release information

ambivalent media relations – mix of proactive, reactive and inactive media contacts

advertorials – paid advertisements that state an editorial position

adversarial public relations – attacking critic openly

information boycott – severing ties with news media

whitewash – cover-up

flakkers – derisive word for public relations people

public information – one alternative word for public relations; others are public affairs, corporate communication

APR – indicates PRSA accreditation

International Association of Business Communicators – professional public relations organization

Public Relations Student Society of America – student public relations organization
