Points to Emphasize

Too often, a beginning researcher chooses a historical study because of access to some data which may have some historic significance. The study then becomes one of searching for a research question for which the data might be relevant instead of starting with a research question and then seeking data. A cart can be put before the horse, but it makes for an awkward and unsatisfactory situation.
