Sontag, Susan. "Looking at War: Photography's View of Devastation and Death." New Yorker 9 December 2002: 82-98. In this article, Sontag, one of the most prominent contemporary visual theorists, discusses the power of photographs to shape our understanding of what happens in reality.

Sontag, Susan. On Photography. NY: Anchor Books, 1977. In this foundational analysis of visual culture, Sontag examines the impact of photography on contemporary society.

Sontag, Susan. Regarding the Pain of Others. Farrar Straus & Giroux, 2002. In this more recent work, Sontag reevaluates her conclusions from On Photography, specifically in relation to images of atrocities and of war.
