Chapter Objectives

This chapter covers a variety of important planning/prewriting strategies to help you generate ideas and develop a structure for writing tasks.

The chapter objectives that follow will help you figure out whether you have really mastered the material presented in this chapter.

After reading this chapter and completing its exercises, you should be able to:

  1. Explain to another student suffering from "writer's block" several strategies to resolve his or her problem

  2. Generate ideas and information with freewriting, listing, detailing, or asking strategic questions

  3. Structure ideas and information through strategies like creating a cluster, a tree diagram, or a time sequence

  4. Create generalization–supported patterns by: (a) drawing principles and looking for generalizations; (b) creating a problem-solving grid; or (c) inventing a traditional or working outline

  5. Use computers and/or the Internet to explore topics and generate ideas
