Chapter Objectives

This chapter will help you focus on the readers that every writer needs to consider in the process of planning, writing, and revising.

The chapter objectives that follow will help you figure out whether you have really mastered the material presented in this chapter.

After reading this chapter and completing its exercises, you should be able to:

  1. Explain to another student why it is a vital part of the writing process to take the readers and the reading and writing community into account

  2. Define the reader or audience of a given written task or assignment

  3. Understand the different reader categories and how they each bring to reading and writing unique assumptions and expectations that need to be taken into account

  4. Adapt content, structure, and style of writing to accommodate readers and reader expectations
