Chapter Objectives

This chapter is intended to assist all writers, but especially those who are familiar with or who participate in communities in which standard English is not the primary means of communicating.

The chapter objectives that follow will help you figure out whether you have really mastered the material presented in this chapter.

After reading this chapter and completing its exercises, you should be able to:

  1. Explain to another student the value of diverse language communities and the definition of "standard English"

  2. Understand the need for writing in accordance with the expectations of the community of readers being addressed

  3. Recognize and revise inappropriate language choices when necessary
