Chapter Objectives

This chapter offers a basic review of the main features of sentence grammar. While you need not become proficient in all the terminology related to these concepts, a basic understanding of these building blocks will help you recognize errors that may distract or even frustrate readers.

The chapter objectives that follow will help you figure out whether you have really mastered the material presented in this chapter.

After reading this chapter and completing its exercises, you should be able to:

  1. Explain to another student basic parts of speech and how they function in sentences

  2. Recognize sentence structure elements like verbals, clauses, and others and become aware of how they can be used to improve writing

  3. Recognizeand use all four sentence types, understanding how these types can contribute to sentence variety
