Comma Splices and Fused Sentences
Chapter Objectives
|
Comma splices and fused sentences are two common and yet serious errors, and they can give the reader the impression that your writing is rushed or even sloppy. This chapter helps you learn to understand, recognize, and revise sentences with either of these errors.
The chapter objectives that follow will help you figure out whether you have really mastered the material presented in this chapter.
After reading this chapter and completing its exercises, you should be able to:
- Explain to another student what a comma splice is and how it is different from a fused sentence
- Explain to another student the different correct ways to join two independent clauses within one sentence
- Recognize comma spliced or fused sentences in your own writing, as well as particular constructions that lend themselves to these errors
- Employ several strategies for figuring out if a suspect word group is a comma splice or fused sentence
- Fix any of these errors you find, using the appropriate strategy outlined in this chapter
- Understand the use of partial sentences/intentional fragments and the reasons they are usually avoided in academic and professional writing?
