Coordination and Subordination
Chapter Objectives

This chapter explains the value of and differences between coordination and subordination, both of which are methods of joining two main clauses into one sentence. For writers who want to improve sentence variety or reduce "choppiness" in their writing, coordination and subordination are key skills.

The chapter objectives that follow will help you figure out whether you have really mastered the material presented in this chapter.

After reading this chapter and completing its exercises, you should be able to:

  1. Explain to another student how to coordinate and subordinate two main clauses to form a compound or complex sentence

  2. Recognize the coordination conjunctions and subordinating words

  3. Coordinate two sentences into a compound sentence

  4. Subordinate two sentences into a complex sentence

  5. Recognize and avoid excessive coordination or subordination, illogical coordination or subordination, and troublesome subordinators
