Chapter Objectives

This chapter will help you recognize wordiness and offer strategies to revise unnecessary words and phrases in sentences.

The chapter objectives that follow will help you figure out whether you have really mastered the material presented in this chapter.

After reading this chapter and completing its exercises, you should be able to:

  1. Explain to another student the difference between well-developed paragraphs and sentences and those that are excessively wordy

  2. Recognize and find alternatives for common causes of wordiness like nominalizations, clichés, and redundant pairs
