This chapter covers all the rules you will need to know to answer difficult capitalization questions you may encounter in your writing.
The chapter objectives that follow will help you figure out whether you have really mastered the material presented in this chapter.
After reading this chapter and completing its exercises, you should be able to:
- Explain to another student some of the basic rules of capitalization, including capitals in quotations, titles, and proper nouns and adjectives
- Understand the importance to many readers of writing that is free of capitalization errors
- Understand why the same word (north/North, river/River, etc.) can be capitalized in one sentence but not another
- Recognize troublesome capitalization problems in your writing and figure out where to go in the handbook to find the answers you need "on-the-fly"
