Chapter Objectives

This chapter covers the many different uses of italics and underlining, and some common errors readers and writers encounter related to the uses of italics and underlining.

The chapter objectives that follow will help you figure out whether you have really mastered the material presented in this chapter.

After reading this chapter and completing its exercises, you should be able to:

  1. Explain to another student when italics and underlining are used and when other ways of designating titles, such as quotation marks, are used

  2. Recognize when special uses of italics, such as foreign words, are required

  3. Italicize and underline effectively for emphasis
