Chapter Objectives

This chapter explains the rules for numbers and numerals and the conventions for using them in general academic writing in a way that is consistent with readers' expectations.

The chapter objectives that follow will help you figure out whether you have really mastered the material presented in this chapter.

After reading this chapter and completing its exercises, you should be able to:

  1. Explain to another student the difference between a number and a numeral

  2. Understand why some numbers are expressed as numbers (twenty-four) and others are represented as numerals (24)

  3. Recognize the most commonly used rules for numbers and numerals
