Chapter Objectives

This chapter offers strategies for dealing with spelling challenges of all kinds. Spelling errors should be caught at the proofreading stage to avoid disrupting or frustrating the reader.

The chapter objectives that follow will help you figure out whether you have really mastered the material presented in this chapter.

After reading this chapter and completing its exercises, you should be able to:

  1. Explain to another student several spelling rules you remember and can easily call upon when you pause to contemplate a suspect word

  2. Explain to another student one or two strategies for improving spelling, such as mnemonics and computer spell checks

  3. Use computer spell checkers, fully aware of their limitations

  4. Recognize and master commonly confused words (which spell checkers do not catch)
