Chapter Objectives

This chapter helps identify some basic ground rules and strategies for participating in a research community and writing based on research. In particular, this chapter discusses topic selection, audience analysis, and formulation of a basic research plan.

The chapter objectives that follow will help you figure out whether you have really mastered the material presented in this chapter.

After reading this chapter and completing its exercises, you should be able to:

  1. explain to another student what is unique about research-based writing
  2. recognize the variety of research and research-based writing possible
  3. demonstrate the ability to forumulate a systematic plan for preparing to write a research-based essay
  4. understand how to develop and use guiding research questions, a research thread, and a researcher persona
  5. recognize the importance of time management in research and employ planning strategies to help manage time effectively, including the development of a planning timeline
