Chapter Objectives

This chapter covers basic rules and expectations for writing about literature.
The chapter objectives that follow will help you figure out whether you have really mastered the material presented in this chapter.

After reading this chapter and completing its exercises, you should be able to:

  1. explain to another student how to read literary works as literature and effectively write about literature;
  2. explain to another student typical literary assignments, such as an explication or text analysis;
  3. recognize and revise common problems in writing about literature, such as verb tense problems;
  4. recognize and write effectively about features of literary technique like symbolism, point of view, and others.
