Matching Style to Community
Objectives

This chapter describes some of the ways writers adapt their style when writing for different communities. Community style can be defined by values, language, formality, and stance. Learn to recognize the differences in style between different communities, and develop strategies for adapting your own style to those communities.

The chapter objectives that follow will help you figure out whether you have really mastered the material presented in this chapter.

After reading this chapter and completing its exercises, you should be able to:

  1. Explain how different communities differ in the styles of writing they consider appropriate and effective
  2. Recognize how decisions in your own writing style are related to the elements of a community’s framework
