Editing Sentence Fragments
Chapter Objectives

Sentence fragments are considered one of the most serious mistakes students can make at the sentence level—and not just in English and composition courses. This chapter will help you understand, recognize, and revise fragments that could distract your academic and professional readers and jeopardize your academic success with written work.

The chapter objectives that follow will help you figure out whether you have really mastered the material presented in this chapter.

After reading this chapter and completing its exercises, you should be able to:

  1. Explain to another student what makes one group of words a sentence and another group of words a fragment

  2. Recognize sentence fragments in your own writing

  3. Employ several strategies for figuring out if a suspect word group is a sentence or a fragment

  4. Fix any fragments you find, using the appropriate strategy outlined near the end of this chapter

  5. Understand the use of partial sentences/intentional fragments and the reasons they are usually avoided in academic and professional writing.
