Web Icon Exercise 23.1 (sample revision)

These are sample revisions, showing one possible way to correct each sentence.

1. Carla has six cats, a Doberman, and a mynah bird. Her pets make it difficult to live with her. (Replace)

2. Monty pays a terrific slide guitar, but he plays loudly and has nowhere to practice but in his bedroom. The constant noise drives his parents insane. (Replace)

3. The apartment is near a swimming pool that is open to the public and has free admission during the winter months. This amenity is very attractive. (specify)

4. The third applicant has edited films not only with Premier but also with Final Cut Pro. That particular combination of skills prompted the studio executive to offer her an interview. (explain)

5. Zach has to go to summer school, Van needs to continue working, and Fred broke his leg. For all of these reasons, they can't go on the road trip. (reword)

6.The business could have failed because (1) the managers had misjudged the market; (2) the venture capital dried up; or (3) the employees had insufficient training. None of these possible reasons mattered to Howard; he was out of a job. (reword)

7. The new waiter at Harvey's never touched the leftovers, rarely grabbed a soft drink, and always brought his own sandwiches. This behavior puzzled the regular crew, who were used to the free lunches on the job. (specify)

8. He wore dark glasses indoors and long-sleeved shirts in the summer. As if that choice of clothing weren't enough to draw suspicion, he always insisted on cutting and dealing the cards. (specify)

9 Widening the thruway would surely tear up the neighborhoods, destroy homes and gardens, and make a tremendous amount of noise. This threat moved the neighborhoods to designate themselves historic districts. (specify)

10. Marianne bought a new SUV, a penthouse apartment, and a cottage in Malibu. Together, these acquisitions suggest she's confident about her earning potential. (reword)
