1. In 1929, as banks failed across the country, Sophia Huxley became nervous; nevertheless, she tried not to show it in public. 2. Sophia's bank told its customers they had nothing to fear; their money was safe. 3. Sophia's safe deposit box held jewelry; her checking account held $75; and her savings account held $175. 4. One morning Sophia played cards with Lorena Walker, the wife of the bank manager; Ann Gabriel, the mayor's secretary; and Ida Phillips, the school principal. 5. Sophia, Ann, and Ida asked Lorena if their money was really safe; Lorena insisted it was. 6. Sophia's intuition told her otherwise; she visited the bank that afternoon. 7. At the bank, Sophia cleaned out her safe deposit box, which held her jewelry; her savings account, which held $150; and her checking account, which held $75. 8. The next morning, the bank did not open; a sign on the door read "Closed until further notice." 9. One day, the town seemed prosperous; the next day, destitute. 10. Sophia, however, had her cash, which was plenty; her jewelry, which she hid; and her intuition, which she treasured more than ever.
