It's pathetic when you can't find a decent po'boy in Louisiana, but that's what happened to me on my most recent trip there. I was horrified to find that my favorite source, R and J's Po'boys, had closed its doors. The family had been in the area selling food and groceries for generations, at least since the 1890s. A neighbor, whose broken-down '79 Plymouth has been in the driveway since the 80s, told me that Ralph had died, June had retired, and their children didn't like to cook. They're trying to decide what to do with the place. "So who's in charge of the po'boys?" I asked. "No one!" said the neighbor, "It's a disgrace! They're leavin' us to starve!"
Now, a reasonable person may argue, "If you're on the Interstate, you can find your usual fast-food joints." But they're only there for the folks who don't know any better. In my opinion, you're now better off bringing your own BLT's from home.
