This chapter reviews the rules governing the use of quotation marks.

  1. Recognize the difference between a direct and an indirect quotation

  2. Correctly incorporate block quotations in writing

  3. Understand the use of single and double quotation marks

  4. Decide whether a given title should be placed in quotation marks

  5. Punctuate question marks, exclamation points, periods, and commas correctly in relationship to quotation marks

  6. Identify and avoid common quotation mark-related errors that will frustrate or confuse readers
