When he arrived in Alaska for his hiking trip, Bill thought he was fully prepared for the weeklong adventure. He had brought his heavily used D-shaped tent, his favorite-since-childhood sleeping bag, and a new packet of cotton T-shirts. His soon-to-be hiking partners, Rico and Denise, met him at the hostel, and they decided to look over one another's gear. When Rico and Denise saw Bill's cotton clothing and much-loved but out-of-date tent and sleeping bag, they were alarmed. Rico said, "This is nineteenth-century stuff!" Denise added, "You shouldn't take a twelve-pound tent backpacking!" Denise's own fully packed backpack weighed less than twenty-two pounds. Rico pointed out that cotton clothes put the hiker at risk of hypothermia and did not belong on hiking trips in the twenty-first century. The three of them spent the rest of the evening driving around Juneau, seeking an extra-light tent and sleeping bag.
