45.1 Smart Spelling Advice

National columnist Marilyn Vos Savant claims that an inability to spell does not necessarily signify low intelligence; however, it does suggest a tendency to be disorganized. Don't despair if you are a poor speller. "You can," she argues, "do something about it."

Marilyn's Parade Magazine column from August 13, 2000 includes useful advice about becoming a good speller. She has also published a book on the topic. Marilyn's advice to "learn a few rules" and "look it up" is standard, but she does have some surprising suggestions. For instance, she suggests not using a spell-checker when you write. Instead, mark the words you are unsure of and look them up in an online dictionary. Then, run the spell-checker to make sure you have not missed anything. She also resurrects the old schoolteacher's remedyof writing down a tricky word correctly ten times. Our "motor memory" can be smarter than our befuddled brains!
