Addressing the Public Community
Objectives

This chapter describes some of the ways writers adapt their style when addressing the public community. Public writing tasks come in many different forms: letters, flyers, pamphlets, newspapers, and web sites. Public writing projects improve your skills and connect you to civic issues in your community.

The chapter objectives that follow will help you figure out whether you have really mastered the material presented in this chapter.

After reading this chapter and completing its exercises, you should be able to:

  1. Explain how public writing tasks are different from academic and workplace writing tasks
  2. Recognize the goals and types of public writing
