During his senior year of college, Joel won a prestigious internship in Washington, D. C., however, it was a dubious honor because it carried a stipend of only $6.50 an hour. Joel had no savings, he did want to take up the internship, nonetheless. He also knew no one in the District.; on the other hand, his cousin Mike was also graduating and wanted to move to a big northern city. Joel and Mike decided that two lean people could live on two lean salaries, therefore, they decided to pack up Joels station wagon and move in October. When they arrived in the District, they found a small cottage apartment near a bus line to Joels job. The rent was $500 per month, consequently; they felt very lucky. Mike found a job bussing tables, and he and Joel lived well for a month until the first cold spell. Then, they discovered why the apartment was so cheap: it had no heat. They also discovered, moreover, that it had little insulation. There was, however, an oven in the kitchen. Joel and Mike, consequently, found themselves shivering around the kitchen table. When their family phoned to ask how they were doing, they lied and said they were fine, however, they invited no one to come and visit them.
