The Fourth Week
Objectives

The fourth chapter is designed to help you draft your research essay. One of the most important concepts is one that should already be familiar to you: this is merely a draft—it doesn’t have to be perfect. However, if you’ve been keeping up with notetaking as you do your research, then it’s quite likely that the draft you write this week will be pretty good.

There are some pretty common problems that research writers face at the drafting stage, and this chapter is meant to help you solve them. In particular:

  • How to wrap your own prose around source material.
  • What to do if you confront two or more sources that disagree.
  • Various ways to organize the information you’ve gathered in your draft.
  • How to write a strong and effective beginning and ending.
  • How to write for reader interest.

In addition to helping you with these key drafting skills, Chapter 4 is intended to provide you with direction on how to keep control over the draft. It’s easy—particularly if you’re awash in information—to lose sight of your own purposes in the essay. What are the most important things you’ve come to understand about your topic? How can you use the information you’ve gathered to make those things clear to someone else?

Learning objectives for Chapter 4 include the following:

  • Develop methods for evaluating conflicting claims in sources.

  • Compose a draft that is organized around your purposes and ideas about the topic.

  • Incorporate techniques in the draft that maintain reader interest.
