Instructor Resources
Welcome to the Instructor Resources section of the Companion Website for The Curious Writer by Bruce Ballenger. This section is designed to supplement the textbook by offering several types of resources: general teaching tips for teaching a writing class, specific tips and additional activities for this particular textbook, several ideas for designing your course with the textbook, and online resources for students. If you are relatively new to the classroom and eager for advice and suggestions, you might begin with the sections titled Teaching Tips and General Resources, then look through the Instructors Resource Manual and Course Syllabi as you plan your own course. If you want to find out more about inquiry-based teaching, youll find helpful links in the General Resources section.
Heres a brief summary of each section and what youll find there:
- Instructors Resource Manual
This manual summarizes the central principles and goals for each chapter, offers additional writing activities the engage students with chapter concepts, provides summaries of all the readings, as well as tips on discussing each chapter. Youll also find download-able images and exercises from the textbook to use as overheads and handouts, as well as suggestions for designing a course with this book.
- Teaching Tips
-
These links will provide general information about teaching writing in the post-secondary classroom—information that is both theoretical and practical. Other resources will also include articles and presentation materials.
- General Resources
While Teaching Tips focuses specifically on teaching writing, the General Resources section focuses on teaching an inquiry-based course issues particularly relevant to this textbook, from responding to students personal writing to studies about learning and motivation to teaching an inquiry-based course. Links that are especially relevant to the particular chapters in this book can be found in this section. You may find yourself returning here as you teach each chapter and want to know more about the theories that inform the approach of this book.
- Course Syllabi
Here youll find a handful of syllabi for different kinds of courses.
The Student Resources section of this website is organized by the chapters in the textbook, and it is designed to 1) offer you additional choices for writing activities and ways of achieving the learning goals for each chapter; 2) offer students more opportunities for learning the material, practicing inquiry-based learning, and assessing their understanding of each chapter; and 3) provide material that can be adapted for use in an online course, or an online component for a course. In the Student Resources section youll find Chapter Overviews, Quizzes, Writing Exercises, Visual Analysis, Writing Samples, Workshop Guidelines, and Reflection on Inquiry modules; as well as a General Web Resources listing for each chapter.
As you plan your course, you can assign activities from any of these sections and point students to others that you want them to review. Some sections contain quizzes that you might find useful. One feature youll find in the Student Resources section that is not in the textbook are a series of pre-reading activities designed to get students thinking about the ideas in the chapter before they read it. Pre-reading activities surface students background knowledge that can be used when theyre learning something new, enabling them to learn more effectively. All of the writing exercises, quizzes, and guidelines reinforce the principles of inquiry-based learning at the heart of The Curious Writer.
