Visual Analysis
This activity contains 2 questions.
Choose one of the following catalogs to study more closely. Each one focuses on a specific subculture and its "artifacts"-that is, the objects, equipment, and/or materials that are central to the subculture. After you've chosen one to focus on, review several of the items for sale, targeted at the particular subculture. Which seem the most important? How can you tell? What does the price of each object suggest about the subculture? How are each of the objects used? What values do they reflect of the group who will be using them? Share your response to these questions in the space below.

Below you'll find Web sites for several different kinds of clubs around the country, all of which constitute distinct subcultures. Choose one to focus on for an "online ethnography"-that is, use the organization's Web site to gather information about the group's behaviors, artifacts, shared beliefs, and rituals. Use a dialogue journal to take notes. Do further research about the group. Then, in the space below, explain what you've found, detailing a preliminary interpretation of this subculture (which may turn into a longer paper later).
