The Writer as Reader: Reading and...
Overview

Chapter 1 examines what it means not just to read, but to read well. The act of reading is truly interactive: it requires a critical mind, a pen in hand, and an interest in sharing your thoughts about what you have read. Drawing from a selection of prose by Kate Chopin, and a sample student essay about Chopin’s “Ripe Figs” this first chapter introduces the essential art of reading, and considers the process of reading itself as a prelude to producing the first draft of an essay.
