Chapter 3 is divided into two parts – the first, which presents a step-by-step sample explication of Langston Hughes’ “Harlem,” and the second part, which analyses “The Judgment of Solomon” from the Hebrew Bible (First Kings). The chapter offers practical advice on developing an essay from initial observations through the final draft, and emphasizes the use of appropriate evidence and effective organization. The structure, content, and purpose of comparative papers are examined closely as well, and, by the end of the chapter, students will have had even more practice composing, organizing, revising, and editing their thoughts about literature.
