Overview

Chapter 6 provides an in-depth explanation of the form and function of interpretation – a setting forth of one or more of the meanings of a work of literature. Here, questions of literary meaning, author intention, and reader response abound. However, the chapter most of the discussion of interpretation by walking the reader through a couple of interpretations of poems, including a student’s essay on Robert Frost’s “Stopping by Woods on a Snowy Evening.” The chapter also stresses the importance of developing critical thinking skills, and revisits the qualities of good prose.
