Writing a Research Paper
Overview

Much of what has been discussed so far in the book culminates in this chapter on writing a research paper. This chapter proceeds from the notion that a critical essay is not a mere expression of personal opinions; if it is any good, it offers evidence that supports the opinions and thus persuades the reader of their objective rightness. To that end, Chapter 14 describes the traditional model and methods for writing a literary research paper, and contains helpful tips on taking notes, drafting a research paper, and considering a sense of proportion (short, medium and long papers — determining which is the right length for the topic at hand). It also contains the ever-important section on avoiding plagiarism and properly documenting sources.
