Introduction

Welcome to the Student Resources section of the Companion Website for A Short Guide to Writing About Literature, Ninth Edition. As Sylvan Barnet and William E. Cain state at the beginning of Chapter 1: "Learning to write is in large measure learning to read." When we read, inevitably, we bring our own knowledge and biases to a text. In order to open our minds to other interpretation, we must learn to read critically.

In this section, a variety of materials are provided to assist you with your course work. Each chapter includes a brief chapter summary, accompanied by annotated Web resources for that chapter’s material and for key literary figures discussed in that chapter. Checklists and extra activities for each chapter are also included.

Last, but not least, you will also find a downloadable PDF file of Analyzing Literature: A Guide for Students by Sharon James McGee (Kansas State University—Salina). This supplement provides critical reading strategies, writing advice, and sample student papers to help you interpret and discuss literary works from a variety of genres. Suggestions for collaborative activities and online research topics are also featured as well as numerous exercises and writing assignments.
