Welcome

Welcome to the Instructor Resources section of the Companion Website for The Language of Argument, 10/e written by Larry Burton and Daniel McDonald. In this section you will find teaching tips and Web Resources you can use for each corresponding part of the text.

The purpose of this Web site is to enhance your students’ learning by extending the information found in the textbook into the Web environment and providing them with different opportunities to develop their abilities as effective writers.

The Student Resources section of this Web site approximates the layout of the textbook. Part 1 focuses on specific types of argumentative writing or issues relating to argument. Parts 2 and 3 provide readings for students to utilize when applying what they learned about argumentation from the previous two parts to writing projects. Part 4 offers "eight rules for good writing."

Each "part" in the Companion Website offers an Overview with accompanying objectives; a Reading Review section that relates student activities to the six stages of cognition; Writing Practice questions tied to the readings in the text; Writing Samples by students reflecting various levels of completion, with commentary; Additional Readings, or links to additional information on the readings and topics in each part; and Writing Resources, links to sites containing strategies related to each part for improving one’s writing.

Your students will also find two additional sections: a General Resources section with links to online writing tools such as a dictionary, thesaurus, citation guide, grammar and usage guide, glossary of rhetorical terms, and a historical and literary time line, that will help students contextualize their readings. In addition, you will find communication resources that will assist students with collaborating with their peers, such as a Chat Space and Discussion Board. We hope you and your students enjoy the Web site and all of the special links we have included for you.
