Writing Your First Draft
Chapter Summary

Chapter 6 guides you through some important considerations for starting to write your research paper. When you complete this chapter, you should be ready to carry out the following actions:

  1. Use the features of your word processing program to create headers and to format the entries on the Works Cited page.
  2. Sort your note cards into a usable arrangement and fine-tune your outline accordingly.
  3. Develop a workable opening that identifies the topic and leads to your thesis.
  4. Incorporate borrowed material into your draft in ways that credit the source and blend the borrowed words and ideas smoothly with your own writing.
  5. Punctuate quoted material correctly.
  6. Avoid committing plagiarism while working with borrowed material.
