Hyphens with numbers
Introduction
|
When whole numbers and fractions are spelled as words, they must often be punctuated with hyphens. Here are some guidelines about when to use hyphens with spelled-out numbers and fractions.
Identify the number being spelled out. Is it between 21 and 99? If so, include a hyphen between the words in the name of the number.
Example: Seventy six percent of our incoming freshmen are receiving some form of financial aid.
Revised: Seventy-six percent of our incoming freshmen are receiving some form of financial aid.
If the number is a fraction whose numerator and denominator are both named, use a hyphen between the parts.
Example: Three quarters of our incoming freshmen are receiving some form of financial aid.
Revised: Three-quarters of our incoming freshmen are receiving some form of financial aid.
- Do not use a hyphen between a fraction used as a noun and a unit of time, distance, or area.
Example: During the last quarter-century, the number of students receiving financial aid has more than doubled.
Revised: During the last quarter century, the number of students receiving financial aid has more than doubled.
Remember: Use a hyphen between words for the names of numbers between 21 and 99.
