Keep it wild!

Since the tornado, there has been lots of debate about the fate of Towering Pines. We feel that it’s fine just the way it is. We urge you to help us convince the developers and real estate agents to keep out of Towering Pines and KEEP IT WILD!

Why should we keep Towering Pines wild?

Towering Pines has been a wilderness since the town’s incorporation in the 19th century. Why is it important that we keep it that way?

• It remains an important source of our community’s history. The trees have fallen, but Towering Pines remains the most important natural landmark in town.
• It remains a place of solace and refuge. Towering Pines was always a place for peace and reflection. Once we clear out the nature trail, it will become that again.
• It remains beautiful. It’s just a different kind of beauty. And imagine what it will be like as the new forest begins to grow.
• It remains an important educational tool. Students can study forest regeneration and the way that storm damage affects a particular place, just as scientists once studied the old trees.
• It’s an investment in our future. If we save it now, our children and their children will be able to enjoy a place like the one we knew before the storm.
• Finally, it remains WILD. The destruction feels like a tragedy to everyone in Hammond. But it was not a tragedy in nature. The tornado was a natural occurrence, just another link in the chain of events that have been shaping and changing this forest for centuries.
