Funding

Literacy Memphis is a non-profit organization. It’s funded by individual donations, business contributions, foundation grants, the City of Memphis, Shelby County, and the federal government.

In the 2002 fiscal year, Literacy Memphis had a budget of 1.3 million dollars.

• $200,000 came from individual donations.
• $350,000 came from business contributions. (Prominent contributors included Airmail Express; Holiday Motel, Incorporated; and the Downtown Business Alliance.)
• $225,000 came from foundation grants, such as the America Reads Network, the Kellogg Foundation for Civic Improvement, and the Foundation to Rebuild American Cities.
• $70,000 came from the Memphis City Government.
• $30,000 came from the Shelby County Government.
$445,000 came from the Federal Government.

In 2001, Literacy Memphis initiated their Build the Future fundraising drive, a five-year effort that they hope will raise more than three million dollars for their organization.
