To fulfill its mission and purpose, Literacy Memphis offers a diverse range of programs.
Literacy Memphis offers a range of free literacy instruction to adults. Adult students may meet with private tutors, attend classes, and/or study in our new computer lab.
Literacy Memphis trains volunteers to become reading tutors. The organization offers training workshops throughout the year and provides all necessary teaching materials.
Literacy Memphis works to encourage families to make reading a regular activity. The Read Me a Story program distributes good books to low-income parents who pledge to read daily to their children. Last year, 432 families were involved in the program. Literacy Memphis hopes to increase the number of participating families to 1,000 in the next three years.
Through the Memphis Reads Program, Literacy Memphis assists a range of local organizations in their efforts to provide literacy services to the community. In the past year, Literacy Memphis has formed partnerships with the West Memphis Literacy Commission, the Memphis Shelter for the Homeless, and Grace Episcopal Church to develop focused literacy programs for special populations.
Literacy Memphis consistently seeks opportunities to increase public awareness of illiteracy in Memphis and the Mid-South. In the past decade, Literacy Memphis has sponsored more than one hundred workshops, published a range of informational flyers and brochures, and produced shows on local television and radio stations.
