Statement of Philosophy and Purpose

Literacy Memphis was founded in 1972 to provide basic literacy and English as a Second Language instruction for adults, ages 17 and older, who read below the fifth grade level.

In the past several decades, Literacy Memphis has expanded its mission in order to more effectively address illiteracy and its causes in Memphis and the Mid-South. Now, in addition to offering tutoring services, we actively encourage low-income families to make reading a regular activity. We also assist a range of groups throughout the community in their efforts to provide literacy services for special populations. Finally, we consistently seek opportunities to increase public awareness of illiteracy in our community.

Why do we do what we do? By helping people improve their literacy skills, we help them improve their lives.
