Leader in Weight Loss Therapies
Dr. Donald Raimes, founder of the American League of Bariatric Surgery Professionals, is the nation's foremost authority on Laparoscopic Adjustable Gastric Banding (LAGB) surgery. This new form of less-invasive weight loss surgery is revolutionizing obesity treatment, changing the lives of thousands of patients for the better. But Dr. Raimes has been vigorous in his advocacy of total patient care, and cautions against those who would promote LAGB surgery as a cure-all. “Surgery should be seen as one item in a much larger program of therapies administered to the patient," he explains. "It works best in conjunction with nutritional counseling, emotional support, group or individual therapy, and a realistic exercise regimen. If you neglect one or more of these other parts of the treatment, the surgery is not going to have the desired effect.”
Dr. Raimes is the founding partner of the Metropolitan Bariatric Pratice in New York State, a -surgeon medical practice that performs over 200 weight loss surgeries per year. He has appeared on numerous news programs to discuss weight loss surgery, and he has provided congressional testimony on several occasions on the topic of licensing standards for bariatric surgeons. His goal, he says, is to ensure that all patients for whom weight loss surgery is a viable option have access to qualified and caring surgeons and related health care professionals, to make their treatment a success. “The surgical community must guard against exploitation of the obese, who very often have reached a state of desperation and will assume very high risks to alleviate their condition,” he warns. “Unscrupulous surgeons who promise unrealistic results, do not provide sufficient support for patients before and after surgery, or perform surgery on patients with clear contraindications, are breaching their ethical duty and causing serious harm.”
