The following information was excerpted from a pamphlet the organization created for local businesses.
Statement of Purpose
The Big Bend Area Tourism Council (BBATC) is an association of businesses in the towns of Alpine, Marathon, Marfa, Study Butte, Terlingua, and Lajitas. Our purpose is to promote the success of our members while also providing a wealth of information both to residents of the region and to the many tourists who visit the region each year.
To this end, the BBATC:
- Owns and operates two visitors centers that provide extensive information about transportation, sightseeing, and recreation in the Big Bend region
- Organizes and leads workshops for member businesses on meeting the needs of tourists
- Publishes a number of brochures targeting specific populations to encourage tourism in the region
- Manages several programs (e.g., the U.S. Military Discount Package, the Silver Saver Program) that offer specific populations discounts the regions businesses
- Shares resources with travel agents and other tourism boards
- Supports and promotes a wide range of functions that promote a spirit of involvement and cooperation in the region
BBACC Statistics
- The BBACC sees an average of 1500 visitors per month at each of their two visitors centers
- The BBACC distributes an average of 780 information packets per month
- The BBACC fields an average of 80 calls a day, most of which are long-distance inquiries about travel to the region, local attractions, and local businesses and services
- The BBACC Web site receives an average of 5000 unique hits per month
