Alpine is the largest town in the Big Bend region (pop. 6200). It has more than 400 hotel rooms, as well as many restaurants, shops, banks, service stations, and several RV parks and campgrounds. Alpine is also the home of Sul Ross State University.
Marathon is a small town (pop. 800) north of Big Bend National Park, with several motels and restaurants, as well as a service station, a post office, and a bank. Recently, several arts-and-crafts and antique shops have opened in town.
These two tiny towns on the western edge of Big Bend National Park (pop. 120 and 25, respectively) offer several restaurants, bars, motels, service stations, and stores, all of which cater to tourists visiting the National Park. Study Butte has a bank and a post office. Each town has a campground with spaces for both tents and RVs.
A small town (pop. 900) north of Big Bend National Park, Fort Davis boasts several restaurants, stores, motels, campgrounds, and service stations. The town also has a bank and a visitors center. At an elevation of 5050 feet above sea level, Fort Davis is the highest town in Texas.
Marfa (pop. 2500) lies north of Big Bend National Park and has several restaurants, bars, motels, service stations, and stores. It is home both to a world-renowned institution of modern art and to the Marfa Mystery Lights, an unexplained meteorological phenomenon that can be seen on the high plains east of town.
